Football writer's journey: 1

You might get worse, you might improve or you might get better

Ever wanted to be a football writer at a major tournament? Read on.

Hi I'm Eamonn the editor of this site. This is my story, I willl be delivering it in short bursts over the next few weeks, of how from teaching for seventeen years I managed to get to cover the Asian Cup as a football writer!

"You might get better, you might stay the same, or you might get worse." So said the Specialist at the Canberra Hospital.

I'd been teaching in Canberra for 17 years. Economics, Business, Accounting and Law and football, always football.

I rode 15 kms to work most weeks, played football after work, took excursions, swam, and visited the gym each week. I was active.

Then one day, I felt ill. Flu like tiredness, sore throat and the rest. Everyone's had it, you go to work and pull through.

For eight weeks I had a week on a week off, I couldn't really walk, but kept trying to get back to work.

Parents started to complain about the absent teacher!

And then the Doctors and Specialist visits started. You name the specialist, I've seen them.

"You might get better, you might stay the same, or you might get worse." So said the Specialist at the Canberra Hospital.

Not me mate, I'll be okay. Anyway what sort of specialist advice was that. Anyone in the street could tell you that..without the $300 fee.

That was six years ago. I'm still sick, very sick, but I'm off to the Asia Cup as writer.

Somehow I'm going to do it, you just watch!

Be warned, I often fail to meet any obligations due to my health. So don't be disappointed if I don't get there:)
